Do you get SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder Season Is Coming… Take Control before it takes YOU.
If you live in Ohio, you know the drill. The leaves are beautiful, the air gets crisp, and suddenly it’s dark before you’ve even figured out what’s for dinner. 🥶
The days get shorter, the temperatures drop, and our cozy couches start looking a whole lot more appealing than our gym shoes. Suddenly, a 5:30 PM workout feels like a midnight expedition.
Sound familiar?
There’s a reason for that! Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression associated with seasonal changes, most commonly during the fall and winter months. Less daylight can affect our internal body clock, sleep patterns, and mood. Even if you think you don’t experience SAD itself, you might notice lower energy, less motivation, more cravings, or a strong desire to hibernate until April.

The good news? You don’t have to wait for spring to feel like yourself again. We can build a few simple habits into our routines to help support our mood, energy, and overall well-being.
1. Keep Your Gym Schedule. Especially When You Don't Feel Like It! 💪
When motivation disappears faster than the sunshine, routines become your best friend.
Regular exercise can help support mood, energy, and sleep. Don't expect to crush every workout - that's not always the intent. Some days, showing up and moving more than you would at home is the win.
Keep your scheduled sessions. Add in a FIT, LIFT or Yoga class. Lift some weights. Take a brisk walk. Move your body in a way you enjoy.
Don't rely on motivation. Build a routine you can fall back on when motivation takes a winter vacation. Schedule your movement and then DON'T Cancel on your health.
2. Sneak in a Little Extra Movement 🚶♀️
Let's be honest: We naturally move less when it's 25 degrees outside. We're not strolling around the neighborhood after dinner or spending Saturday afternoon working in the yard. We're driving from the heated garage to the heated building and calling it a day!
Try adding a little extra movement to your daily routine:
Go up and down your stairs a few times to get that engine (your brain and metabolism) running.
Hop on the treadmill while watching your favorite show. You can go slow. Just GO.
Add a little cardio to your strength-training routine. Pop on the rower or bike before class while you're waiting around.
Take the long way to get where you need in large buildings, park farther away, or have a kitchen dance party. Waiting for something to cook? Bust out 10 squats while you wait.
It doesn't have to be intense. Those little bursts of movement add up, and your body benefits from moving consistently throughout the day.
"Exercise Snacks" add up (just like those real snacks you may sneak in)😉
3. Keep the Color on Your Plate 🥦
When fresh produce is expensive, out of season, or looking a little sad at the grocery store, don't forget them!
Frozen fruits and vegetables are fantastic options. They're convenient, budget-friendly, nutritious, and ready whenever you need them.
Stock up on frozen berries for smoothies, frozen broccoli for dinner, and vegetables you can toss into soups, stir-fries, or scrambled eggs.
Aim to include produce throughout your week, along with protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich foods to help keep you nourished and satisfied.
Your body still needs good fuel in January, even if your motivation to meal prep has left the building.

4. Don't Let Your Social Life Hibernate! 👫
When it's cold and dark, it's easy to cancel plans, stay home, and accidentally go three days without seeing another human being outside your household.
Connection matters!
Schedule a weekly workout with a friend. Sign up for a group class. Plan a coffee date, a walking/shopping date, or a regular girls' night. Put it on the calendar so you have a reason to get dressed, leave the house, and connect with people who make you feel good.
Bonus: When someone is expecting you at the gym, you're a whole lot less likely to hit snooze and renegotiate your entire existence at 6 AM.
5. BOOK THE TRIP! ✈️
Okay, we're not saying you need a tropical vacation to survive Ohio winter… but we're also not not saying that.
Having something fun on the calendar gives you something to look forward to. It could be a weekend getaway, a concert, a hiking trip, a dinner with friends, or even a day exploring somewhere new.
It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Give yourself something to anticipate beyond scraping ice off your windshield.

6. Get Some Daylight When You Can ☀️
Even when it's chilly, try to get outside during daylight hours. Take a morning walk, drink your coffee by a sunny window, or step outside during your lunch break. If it's real cold out - think of it like a trendy cold plunge.
If winter consistently affects your mood, a light therapy box may also be worth discussing with your healthcare provider. Bright-light therapy can help some people with winter-pattern SAD, but it's important to choose an appropriate device and use it safely, especially if you have certain eye conditions or take medications that increase light sensitivity.
And if your low mood, fatigue, or loss of interest is persistent or interfering with daily life, talk with a healthcare professional. You don't have to tough it out until the clocks change.
Let's Make This Winter a Little Brighter ❤️
We can't control the weather, the sunset, or the fact that Ohio sometimes feels like it has 47 consecutive days of gray skies.
But we can control some of the habits that help us feel better.
🎯Move your body. Nourish yourself. Make plans with friends. Get outside when you can. Give yourself something fun to look forward to.
And most importantly, give yourself some grace. You don't have to be productive, energetic, and cheerful every single day. Some days, the win is simply showing up for yourself in whatever way you can.
At COREFIT, we believe in moving, nourishing, and enjoying life in every season. You don't have to wait until you feel motivated to take that first step. Sometimes, taking the first step is what helps you feel better.
Let's keep showing up for ourselves and each other this winter.
Because sunshine is great… but strong muscles, good friends, a little movement, and something fun on the calendar are even better! 😉
Find YOUR Fit. You are worth it. 💛
